Number one: You need a very strong reason or motivation to succeed on the internet.  For some, simply wanting to experience the joy of independence that goes with being in business for oneself will be motivation enough.  Someone else may be in a job that seemingly is going nowhere and will never in 10 lifetimes give them the quality of life they dream of.  The desire for extra income to relieve the burden of college loans, mortgages, medical bills, and the like can be strong enough to motivate success.  Those who rarely fail are those who must have success as if their lives depended on it.  What ever it takes to motivate you to succeed on the internet is something you will have to find inside of yourself, because you will need it to see you through.

Number two: You need to believe that it is possible to make money on the internet and to make a good living at it.  There are those who make millions on the internet from the comforts of there own home offices, and there are those who don’t make a dime.  Which one are you?  There are success stories and testimonies of real people making real money all over the internet.  Do a Google search or do some research at your local library or bookstore and read some of the success stories.  You can make money on the internet, but you must believe that you can.  If you think that you can’t, then you won’t.  There is an old saying which goes, “As a man (or woman) thinks within himself, so is he (or she).”  What do you think you can do?

Number three: You need to take action.  You have to commit.  Now here is a word of caution.  Making a commitment does not mean jumping into the first opportunity that comes along. Commitment means that you’ve decided to start your internet business at some scheduled date in the future and you are committed to doing the necessary research and due diligence before launching your website business for the world see.  An internet business is a like any other business.  You’ll have to establish sound business procedures, just like you would if you opened a brick and mortar establishment.

Be motivated, believe that you can make money, and take action.  Start your online business with something that you like to do.  The road to success seems never as long when you are doing something that you enjoy.

When asked what’s a good home based business to get into, I’ll drop a name or two, and then I always end up saying, “Do something that you enjoy doing.” There are a lot of choices out there. Just be careful, take your time, and read all of the small print.

There are a few things that should be considered in any work at home business, especially if you’re looking for ideas and offers on the internet that will provide an income.

First of all, what is the product or service and would you use it yourself?  How is the presentation?  Is the website design appealing?  Is there a market for the product?  There are some things that nobody wants to buy even though you might love it.  Search the internet to get a feel for how many others are interested in your chosen product or service.  At http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ you can type in the name of a product or service and see how many others are interested in it.

Next, is the business reputable?  Nowadays, you can find out if the business is less than what it claims to be by doing a Google search and reading what others have to say about the business.  Be careful though, some “shifty” marketers may call a business a “scam” just to attract you to their business propositions.  Either way, check them both out carefully.

Does the product or service provide passive income?  Can you sell it once and get paid indefinitely.  Businesses that are set up as subscription services or auto-renewal consumable products usually provide passive income.

Does the business run itself?  A business that can run on automatic pilot is a plus.  In that way, the business can make money 24/7, even if it’s ignored for indefinite periods of time.  Downloadable products and businesses that utilize drop shipments are often set up to run unattended.

Does the business offer multiple streams of income?  A business that offers more than one product or service is a plus.  If one product experiences a down turn in market share, then the other products can sustain the business.

Is the business flexible enough to update the product line or services and flexible enough to introduce new products and services, in order to keep the customers happy?

If you’re joining someone’s business, does the business have a responsive support mechanism in place?  Nothing is worse than getting started in a promising business arrangement and the owner or sponsor disappears after you sign on.  It happens all the time.  So be careful, and choose wisely.

There are literally thousands of profitable home business ideas for you to choose from, which will fit every type of personality and all levels of income, from dealing informational products on the web, to baking pastries for sale to restaurants and grocery stores. There is a lot of money to be made by finding a need for goods and services and filling that need.

Once you finally discover you niche, you’ll have fun deciding on what to call your business (its domain name), and how you want it to look (its website design).

When you work from home, any enterprise you start has the potential to grow into a never-ending money machine!  It just depends on how much your niche is in command in your community marketplace or on the Internet.  So whatever you choose to do, choose wisely, and make sure that you enjoy it.

As a note, free websites for advertising your own products or services should not be confused with some affiliate opportunities that offer free websites  to promote predetermined products and services with replicated websites.

Here are some of the features you should look  for when shopping around for  free website hosting

• Free domain names. (You will have to choose an existing name from a list of sub domains)
• Unlimited web pages (clarify what is meant by unlimited before signing up)
• Free web hosting. (Make sure that the company has been in business for awhile.  A lot of free hosting companies are here today and gone tomorrow)
• FTP access for uploading files.
• A WYSIWYG program to design your own website free.  (This is wishful thinking)
• At least 5mb file size limits. (This is important)
• Unlimited bandwidth (Clarify this before signing up)
• Secure hosting service.  ( Up at least 98% of the time or better)
• Interactive features (chat rooms, message boards, games, online ordering.  Some companies offer this as a paid add on)
• Free email account(s)
• Online support and help desk (shy away from companies that don’t offer support)

You may not find all of the above features on any one free website host, but you should be able to find most of them.  Some free hosting companies will supply a lot of these features and charge for others, such as chat rooms, message boards, etc.  Some will give you everything free and then start charging later.  Be ready to pay or bail.

Unfortunately, build free website comes with restrictions and limitations.   Spam is not tolerated with any web hosting company, free or paid, and when it is free, any “sniff” of spam can cause immediate cancellation without explanation.  Although, the companies will advertise unlimited bandwidth, if you plan to offer movies, large mp3 files, or some other large files, you may have to limit your downloads, in order not to exceed the actual bandwidth limitation.   Because free website services generate their income from advertising on the free websites they offer, you will not be able to redirect your website for any reason and any attempt to do so will probably result in termination without notice.

Even with the restrictions and some of the annoying limitations, it is possible to get your product or service on the internet at no initial cost to you.  However, if you intend to stick around for awhile and brand your identity on the internet, you may want to get your own domain name and investigate some of the paid services which start as low as three dollars a month.

A website as defined by Webster is a set of interconnected web pages, usually including a homepage, generally located on the same server or hosting account, and prepared and maintained as a collection of information by a person, group, or organization.

A website is organized similar to the way files are stored in folders on your computer.  Each website has its own identifier (file name) called a web address or url, and this url usually points to the main page (folder) on the website, also called the homepage.  Other interconnected files or sub pages within the website share the same url but have additional tags or names added to identify their location.

In order to find the main page or a sub page of a website, the url must be typed in the browser window of a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari, and sent out into the World Wide Web to look for the page with that url.  Urls start with the characters http://, followed by a domain name such as “yourdomainname” and have a variety of endings, the most common being “.com.”  Together, the url looks like http://yourdomainname.com.  It can also appear as http://www.yourdomainname.com, even though most browsers no longer require the www.  A url leading to a sub page would appear like http://yourdomainname.com/subpage.  From the url that is typed into the browser window, the browser locates the web host or server for yourdomainname.com and then finds the correct page in the website and displays that page on your computer screen.

A webhost is simply a server (computer) that is always online so that people with internet access can view the files on the server.  By having yourdomainname.com hosted by a server, you and the general public can view the files on your website 24 hours a day.

Websites can be used to publicly or privately display a variety of information.  Access beyond the first page on a private website normally requires a password, which is issued by the administrator of that website.  An example of private websites are some Social websites like Facebook and Myspace which require registration before full access is granted.

There are approximately eight main types of websites, although the number varies depending on who you’re talking to.  The most common website types are commercial, personal, organizational, educational, entertainment, news, blog, and hybrid.  The names are self explanatory and hybrid is merely a website that combines two or more of the website types and their characteristics into a single website.  Social websites more often than not fall under the hybrid category, and some consider social sites a website type in itself.

So if you’re thinking about creating a presence on the world wide web, you’re going to need a website.  When choosing a domain name and a hosting company, you will have two broad choices, paid and free.  You will need to consider the purpose of your website before choosing a domain name or a hosting company.  Even though free hosting for your website is a choice and looks inviting, most free services are restrictive, and keep in mind the old adage, “You get what you pay for.”
